Prepare your Australian CV before you apply from the UK

Make it easy for an employer to understand what you do, what you have achieved and what still needs checking. A clear CV helps communicate your experience; it cannot create a vacancy or settle visa eligibility.

1. Start with one real job advert

Choose a role you could realistically do. Highlight its essential skills and evidence requirements. Tailor your summary and relevant experience to that role using accurate terminology from the advert. Never add a skill or licence you do not hold.

2. Explain your work with evidence

Replace a list of duties with specific examples of work completed, equipment used, responsibilities and results. Use numbers only when you can substantiate them.

Fictional example

Instead of “Experienced electrician”, explain the actual work: “UK commercial electrician working on office fit-outs, installation testing and fault finding. Coordinated work with other trades and maintained test records.” Add your genuine qualifications, project scope and results.

3. Make UK qualifications understandable

Give the qualification title, awarding body and date. Describe relevant training and responsibilities in plain language. Do not describe a UK qualification as an Australian equivalent unless that equivalence has been established. For licensed trades, check the relevant Australian state or territory regulator separately.

4. State location and availability clearly

Say that you are currently in the UK, when you could be available and what work rights you actually have. If you require sponsorship, state this accurately when the application asks. Do not imply that an employer sponsors applicants without checking the vacancy.

5. Check the essentials before sending
